My husband is selfish.
He does whatever he wants and doesn’t think twice about it.
If he wants to go to the gym, he goes. Even if one of the kids is sick, chores need to be done, or he’s been gone all week on a work trip.
He’ll sit and watch football all day while I’m running around doing laundry, grocery shopping, driving kids to playdates…..everything
He sleeps in while I’m the first one to get up with the kids and make them breakfast.
That’s why I have no time to work out, eat right, meal prep, go for a walk, or have a minute to myself to do whatever ever the eff I want.
If he were more helpful, I could focus on finally losing weight and taking care of myself.
How often do you feel this way or hear other women talking like this? I hear it all the time with my friends AND clients and here’s what I coach them on.
Your husband may be selfish. I can’t answer that as I’m not married to him. But, you are the one who tolerates it.
You allow yourself to use it as a reason not to take care of yourself or do the things you want to do.
Why?
Because it’s easier than having an honest conversation with your partner?
Because it’s not worth the fight?
Because you feel guilty for taking time for yourself?
Because you’re scared?
Because this is the way it’s always been and you don’t think he will change?
First, you must first understand why you choose to self-sacrifice. There’s always a reason if you can get quiet enough to hear it.
Second, own the fact that using your husband and his perceived selfishness is an excuse.
He does not control you, you do. If you want things to change, you can’t continue to lean on this as a reason any longer.
Third, consider changing your perspective of your husband. Seeing him as a selfish person creates distance from him. In order to elicit his involvement with you and the household needs you will need connection, not distance. You get to choose your thoughts about him. What thoughts feel more loving? (PS, this does not mean bullshit yourself. You can be honest and loving, without being Polly Anna).
Fourth, what can you learn from him? Maybe you could learn to be a little less selfless and more selfish.
Finally, take all the above and practice it one micro change at a time. Make small choices and communicate in advance your plan. Get ready to freak the eff out because it’s going to feel foreign, scary, unsettled, and a ton of other emotions as you begin to break the cycle. You can either let these emotions paralyze you, or you can allow them to be there and keep going.
This is how we do health & weight loss in The SHED.
We identify all the things in life that are preventing you from working on yourself; including your perspective on your husband’s selfishness and change them. We teach you to remove real and perceived barriers.
I teach women how to clear a mental and physical path so they can easily implement their health protocol.
These are the things that need to be addressed. Because if it’s not, it will always continue to stop your momentum.
