Traditional gender roles force professional women into the trap of overdoing and overcompensating.
What I see with my clients is a belief that because they’ve been at work all day, they need to “make up for it” when they get home.
The guilt of being gone kicks them into an overdrive of overcompensation.
And because gender roles for women are ones that involve caregiving, cooking, cleaning, shopping, organizing, managing hired help, supporting their partners, and volunteering, there leaves no time for themselves.
This overdoing and overcompensating lead to resentment, burnout, health conditions, and weight gain.
It’s a cycle with no end in sight because they WANT to be a career woman AND a mom/friend/wife/partner/
They want both a career and a family but assuming all traditional gender roles while working full time isn’t realistic nor sustainable.
Not without sacrificing their health and well-being.
Over time, the constant stress and overwhelm tips the scales, and women exit the workforce.
They are forced to choose one over the other.
And choosing your family over your career is more societally accepted and in line with generational beliefs that women should always put their family first, even above their own needs, wants, and desires.
Now listen, you may WANT to stay home, but you shouldn’t HAVE to choose in order to maintain your emotional and physical well-being.
