“I travel for work a lot and don’t have control over what or where I eat. Dinners are usually with clients and revolve around steak, red wine, and whiskey. I can’t NOT participate, I’m the boss so I HAVE to be there. Add on airports, hotels, and not having access to healthy foods, and I just don’t see how this can work.”
It can work, and it does work for my clients.
Here are some of the things they do to navigate travel & nutrition.
First, know you are not alone. If you are trying to clean up your diet, feel better, and lose weight, others are too. They want the same thing you do but feel stuck or obligated to “eat & drink” all the things, the whole time wishing they weren’t.
By deciding to NOT treat your body like a dumpster, communicating your needs, and driving some of the decisions on where to eat, you give others permission to do the same.
Every time my clients do this, nearly everyone at the table breathes a sigh of relief because they are feeling the SAME way.
You give others permission to care for themselves as well.
Second, ask for a hotel room with a mini fridge or stay in an extended stay suite with a mini kitchen. Place an Instacart order before you leave with fruit, veggies, pre-made salads, and cooked protein so you are stocked and ready when you land.
Third, pack healthy foods for the plane such as turkey/beef jerky, packets of bone broth, pre-cut fruit & veggies, nut butter packets, or keto cups. Yes, you’ll get through TSA with all of this if traveling continental.
Fourth, if attending a conference where lunch or dinner is pre-determined, call the Food & Beverage department in advance and let them know of your dietary requests. Ask them to prepare a meal that works within your nutrition needs. If they cannot, research local restaurants and have a meal delivered to you.
Yes, be THAT woman and own it.
Unless you plan on quitting your job, you’ll need to figure out how to navigate work travel while staying on your plan.
It’ll take some practice but once you have it down, it becomes your new normal.

Rachel Leigh
“I joined the SHED looking for a kick start to change my eating habits and got so much more. Rachel made this such an amazing experience with her transparent style. Coaching, community, and self-reflection—it’s all a part of the program and gets you to look deeper than just eating habits. Rachel and her team provide so many helpful tools that there will be something for everyone. I liked the scientific aspects of learning about what works for me through the food sensitivity test. I now have a better playbook and plan for how I can take my health into my own hands and make intentional choices that work for me.” Carol C. – Chief Human Resource Officer
